    Portfolio: Websites

My spare time over the last 15 years has taken up with creating, editing, and managing several websites.

    The current batch of sites includes;

    short fiction website

    short fiction website

Short-fiction.co.uk – A short fiction showcase website, where unpublished (and sometimes published) authors can submit their writing for others to read and review.  The site is completely free (for both writers and readers), and pretty much 100% hand coded by myself.  Each author can submit stories online (saved into MySQL database), using a javascript wysiwig editor for some formatting).

They can then edit / delete stories at any time.  Readers can vote, send feedback (through a system which hides e-mail addresses), and search for stories using full english search terms.  The site incorporates the tools I need to manage the site, each story posted is held in the database to be checked and authorised by me, which I can do anywhere in the world using the admin tools I wrote.  Already well over 4,500 stories in every genre possible, including poetry and song lyrics.

    Darts, Beers and Cheers

    My darts fansite

    Darts, Beers, and Cheers

My latest addition to the website family is a fan/community site for the game of darts – “Darts, Beers, and Cheers!”.  It focuses on the PDC darts organisation – as seen on Sky Sports (and now ITV).   The site’s look and feel was completely designed bottom up by myself, including the title banner.

Hosted like this site using a combination of WordPress and a handful of plugins.  After only two days online it featured an exclusive interview with a top darts player.

UPDATE: This darts website is now one of THE sources of darts info, with MANY player interviews, and lots of news and inside info on the pdc darts scene.  I am now friends with many players, and am working with Bravo TV to help publicise their new TV coverage.

    My new insult generator website

    My new insult generator website

    Insult Generator

Brand new for May 2009 is my (adult) InsultsandAbuse.com website.  It’s a random insult generator, written for a bit of fun, and making adults chuckle everywhere.  Don’t visit if you are easily offended, as the insults can be of the very strongest variety!  Allows user contributions, using my own ‘insult grammer’ system to create millions of combinations.

Written in PHP and MySQL – mainly using the MySQL database to select random rows of data for speed.  Also added a feature to allow you to e-mail a particulary good insult to a friend – they are sent an e-mail asking them to come and collect the insult (ids identify the unique combination)

My Lord of the Rings online fansite

My Lord of the Rings online fansite

The Madhouse Tavern – a huge fansite and community for the fantasy MMO, Lord of the Rings Online.  This site has been active for over two years (slightly longer than the game has been generally available), and is well known within the games community and the European publishers, Codemasters Online.  I often run officially sanctioned competitions, offering up exclusive prizes supplied by Codemasters themselves.  The site is probably Europes largest, with over 1,500 members, and over 10,000 forum posts and articles.  Running the site has helped cement my position as a MMO gaming ‘guru’ – and a great working relationship with the Codemasters team, attending many events as ‘press’ at their invite.

The site runs an open source CMS called ‘Php fusion’, with enhancements and modifications (including the theme) by myself in PHP and MySQL.

    My JGE fansite

    My JGE fansite

The Quasar Bar – again another fansite/community site for an online MMO, this time for NetDevil/Codemasters space action MMO, Jumpgate Evolution.  As I write this, the game is about to beta (anytime ‘soon’), and the site has been up for nearly a year, although content has been sparse upto now.

The site runs an open source CMS called ‘php fusion’, with enhancements and modifications (including the theme) by myself in PHP and MySQL.

Oh and if you fancy trying out a brand new space MMO, head over to the site, and follow the link to sign up for a beta place! :)

    Stout n Sturdy gaming kin

    Stout n Sturdy gaming kin

    Stout n Sturdy gaming kinship.

This site isn’t mine as such, but I host and maintain it for the gaming kin.  The idea behind a gaming kin is a group of people (who often become friends in real life) who all play one or more online games (MMO’s) together.

Stout n Sturdy is a pan european (mainly English, Welsh, and German) mature ‘guild’ of gamers, who mostly play Lord of the Rings Online and Warhammer Online.  I’m one of em.

The site uses a combination of open source packages – WordPress and SMF for the forums.

Oh and new members always welcome!

    The Crafty Writer

    The Crafty Writer

The Crafty Writer‘ is the new website created for my good wife, who in my opinion is a master crafter (or many disciplines, including cross stitch, paper crafting, and knitting.

Nicola (my wife) is also a budding writer, and is learning all the time about the fine art of story telling.

This site is her personal blog site, to showcase her craft projects, and to discuss all and sundry.

The galleries on this site are growing every week, as Nicola posts more of her completed craft projects

    superlative loans

    Superlative Loans

A recent project for 2010, is a small company website for my uncle, featuring a unique design by myself (not my normal forte), and some php contact forms.

I’m fairly happy with the final design, it looks the part – a local loan company, so professional without looking too corporate!

Not too bad for a favour design anyway.

You can see the full website here; http://www.superlativeloans.co.uk again hosted by myself on my dedicated server.
